A major breakthrough in blue-phase LCD technology will help VR become popular! From Baidu VR

Display technology is experiencing a rapid development and there is no sign of stopping. According to researchers, in the next few years, the display pixel density will triple.

Progress in display technology will help boost VR

Although a lot of electronic devices can benefit from it, it's hard to say that the most profitable ones are smart phones and virtual reality devices.

We all know that VR helmets work by placing a small-size display within a short distance of the user's eyeglasses, so a high pixel density makes the display content more fluid and clear.

This technology, which is capable of achieving a significant increase in pixel density, is called a blue-phase LCD display. Unlike a traditional LCD panel that uses red, green, and blue 3 pixels, a blue-phase LCD can quickly transition between these three colors at a speed that makes you think you're only seeing a single color.

With the help of this technology, traditional filters are no longer needed on the LCD panel, and the space required between individual pixels can be reduced, allowing the same space to accommodate more pixels.

“Apple's Retina display now has a pixel density of around 500ppi,” said Shin-Tson Wu, head of the blue-phase LCD research team at the School of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida. “With our new technology, the pixel density at the same size can be It reaches 1500ppi."

The blue-phase LCD has been demonstrated for the first time since 2008, but researchers have now reduced its operating voltage to a low enough level to realize its potential for mass adoption.

According to the introduction, the equipment made using this technology will enter the prototype development stage next year, and it will also help VR popularize in the mainstream market.

"For virtual reality or augmented reality, this technology is particularly attractive because both must achieve high resolution on a small-sized screen to make the image look as clear as possible," added Shin-Tson Wu. .

Optical Color Glass Filter

A color filter is an Optical Filter that expresses colors. It can precisely select the small range of light waves to be passed, while reflecting off other undesired wavelengths. The color filter is usually installed in front of the light source, so that the human eye can receive the saturated light of a certain color. There are infrared filters, green, blue, etc. Compared with UV filters and VD filters, it is a general term for colored filters. Such as contrast filter, color separation filter, LB filter, etc.
Colored glass exhibits different colors due to its absorption in the visible light waveband. Colored glass is widely used in laser protection, industrial measurement and environmental measurement instruments.
