Former Google team formed Otto's focus on truck driverless technology

Otto, a startup created by Google's former executive team, will focus on developing driverless technology for trucks.

As companies such as Google, Tesla, General Motors, and Uber continue to improve driverless technology for passenger cars, Otto turned its attention to the US$700 billion truck industry.

Otto's main leaders are Anthony Levandowski and Lior Ron. Lewandowski was a key figure in Google's driverless technology, and Ron was the chief technology officer of the Israeli army and later served as an executive on Google Maps.

The two left Google in January and co-financed Otto with Don Burnette and Claire Delaunay.

Ron said: "We think that solving the problems on the highway and the problem of trucks driving at high speed is a big challenge, but it can be done with existing technology." Ron also said that to achieve unmanned driving on the highway. It is much easier than in the city because there are no pedestrians on the highway and there are fewer intersections.

In the application of driverless technology, trucks also have some advantages, such as the sensor can be placed higher than the ground, which allows the laser and camera to cover a wider range.

Otto plans to sell its unmanned-capable equipment to existing trucks, but has not disclosed when its products will be available. The company's technology can only be used on highways, but drivers are required to exit the highway, a configuration that allows trucks to travel longer distances.

Ron said: "The truck driver basically looks at the autopilot, and more plays the role of the supervisor. We can automatically drive from one exit to another, at which the driver still needs to be on duty. This will fuel and support the truck."

In the past few weeks, Otto has been testing three trucks on a highway in California.

Although several states in the United States have regulations for driverless trucks, there is no national level of regulatory law. Europe has also made continuous progress in the technology of driverless trucks. Volvo, Dalem and Volkswagen also organized a team across Europe last month.

Otto, a San Francisco-based startup, deserves industry attention. Levantowski’s previously founded company, 510 Systems, was acquired by Google in 2008, and its technology helped Google lay the foundation for a driverless car project.
