1. How to choose a hardware platform?

Nowadays, the more common and high performance ARM9, A7, A8, A9 platforms, often we will fall into many misunderstandings when choosing the platform. If there is no touch display or high-resolution touch display (resolution greater than 800*480) in your product, just simple operation peripherals such as: 100M network port, CAN port, serial port, SPI, 4G, Wi- Fi and the requirements of the size, power consumption and price of its own products, then Freescale's ARM9 is more suitable. If your product has certain requirements for resolution, you need to run the database, Java virtual machine, and run the precursor network port for peripherals. It is recommended to choose TI's A8 platform or NXP's A7 platform. When your product involves high-definition video processing, video surveillance, multi-screen display, and need to have SATA hard drive for mass storage, it is recommended to choose Freescale A9 platform.

2, the maker platform or the mainstream core board

Choose a maker platform or a mainstream core board? This is actually a pseudo-proposition that the positioning of the two products is completely different. The former can be understood as an audiophile toy, while the latter is a product used in industrial applications. Now the more famous Raspberry Pi, it is famous for its small but complete sparrows. The board is powerful, there are many open source materials on the Internet, and various forums also provide strong technical support. As a result, many engineers will use this product for their own products. Due to the positioning problem of the product, you will find that development is easy but subsequent industrial-level testing is troublesome. More importantly, if your product is mass-produced, then supply will be a very difficult problem.

3. Choose Android or Linux?

Many people think that Android is the mainstream when choosing an operating system. Later, you can install various APPs, and the operation interface can also be more dazzling. However, the author believes that Android is a good choice for some advertising machines, a la carte machines, handheld pads, and high entertainment requirements. But in some industrial industries, especially when it comes to extending peripherals, Android is not working. For example, the expansion network port, the expansion of several serial ports, the expansion of the CAN port, often the chip manufacturer drivers of these programs do not support the need to transplant themselves, the engineers who are not very familiar with the operating system is very tricky.

4. Is the chip solution still the core board?

The chip manufacturer usually provides the schematic board of the evaluation board, the PCB, and the complete DEMO. Many engineers think that this is almost indistinguishable from the core board, and it is entirely possible to produce R&D by itself. But in fact, the cost of producing PCBs with evaluation boards is very high, including: material procurement costs, testing costs, and production costs. A core board has hundreds of materials, and it is often possible to enter the trap with a little careless choice for some capacitor and inductor suppliers, and it will be difficult to locate if something goes wrong. Generally, the core board has at least 4 layers of PCB. It is difficult to mass-produce without a certain production capacity, and the cost of external OEM is low. After the final product is produced, it has to go through a series of tests. If the volume is not particularly large, it is still worthwhile to buy the core board of the mainstream manufacturers.

5, the delivery cycle is the key

After the product is developed, it is generally subject to sample testing, small batch trial production, and mass production. These processes usually take one year to ensure stable mass production. The life cycle of a typical company's products is at least two years, which is to ensure that the core board suppliers can supply stably within three years. There are three main reasons for the discontinuation of the core board suppliers: the chip factory is shut down, the core components are discontinued, and the production is stopped for its own reasons. Among them, the problem of production suspension due to their own reasons is mainly concentrated in some small companies. Such companies are often run by a few people, and there are many uncertainties in the future. Therefore, it is very important to choose a supplier that can stabilize long-term supply.
