Olympics boost Taiwan's LED sales soared 16.1%

In the first half of this year, sales of new energy-saving lamps in Taiwan have soared in the first half of this year, driven by the Beijing Olympics and high energy prices. Taiwan's light-emitting diode (LED) manufacturers announced that their sales in the first half of this year increased by 16.1% over the same period last year.

According to data provided by various companies to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, sales of these companies in the first half of 2008 increased from NT$20.8 billion in the same period last year to NT$24.2 billion (US$771.3 million). According to some analysts, the LED market is expanding and the strong demand from the Beijing Olympics is driving sales growth.

Ivan Lin, an analyst at LEDinside, a research firm in Taipei, said that new applications are growing. LEDs are increasingly being used as backlights for notebook computers and are widely used in streetlights and factory lighting.

According to Robert Steele, an analyst at Strategies Unlimited, in 2007, the market for high-brightness LEDs increased to $4.6 billion, an increase of 9.5%, compared to only 6% in 2005 and 2006. He said that in 2007, LED usage in the logo, automotive, signal and lighting increased by 20% overall, with the highest growth rate of lighting applications. According to Steele, the entire high-brightness LED market is expected to grow at a cumulative rate of 20%, reaching $11.4 billion by 2012.

According to LEDinside data, Taiwan has the world's second largest LED industry, accounting for 20% of the global market. Japan has the world's largest LED industry with a global market share of 37%. LEDinside predicts that as many flat panel display manufacturers in Taiwan are eager to enter this market, by 2010, the global market share of Taiwan's LED industry will reach 30%.

People are turning to LEDs to save energy and reduce electricity bills. These lighting fixtures were originally known as decorations on Christmas trees. LEDs emit light through the chip, rather than through the incandescent filaments in the bulb or the gas filled in the fluorescent tube, thus reducing energy consumption. LEDs consume about one-tenth the energy of incandescent bulbs and last for ten years or more. In addition, LEDs generate almost no heat, which reduces fire hazards.
