HD surround view system solution for ADAS and support for pedestrian monitoring

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) is a system that assists drivers in driving a car. It can greatly improve vehicle safety and road safety and is becoming the fastest growing automotive application. The application of lane departure warning systems has become more and more popular, and parking assist systems, especially rear view and panoramic parking, are becoming more and more popular.

Recently, Shiqiang supplier Renesas launched the R-Car V2H-based HD surround vision system solution, which uses state-of-the-art image recognition technology to support high-resolution surround and pedestrian monitoring in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). . This is Renesas' first R-Car series of ADAS devices that include additional features to improve performance, reduce power consumption, and enhance the safety of traditional and emerging driverless vehicles.

As shown above, the system can access six megapixel high-definition digital cameras, LVDS or Ethernet. Users can use the four-way camera to develop the look-around. Each camera can independently monitor pedestrians and provide warnings. The other two cameras can be used for front-view based LDWS application development. The chip integrates 2D and 3D image processing engines to make the look-and-feel display more realistic and more distant. The internal IMR and IMP core share some of the image processing tasks, reducing the CPU workload, while the CPU uses the ARM® Cortex®-A15 dual core and operates at up to 1.0 GHz, ensuring powerful image processing.

Main features of R-Car V2H SoC:

(1) Integrates important ADAS functions on a single chip and enables low power consumption

The R-Car V2H SoC incorporates an IMR core dedicated to viewpoint conversion, the Renesas IMP-X4 image recognition core and a 3D graphics core. These cores provide image-related technology for vehicles that wish to achieve government regulations and insurance safety ratings. ADAS requirements. The overall architecture of R-Car V2H is optimized to reduce memory bandwidth usage and overall latency. Six IMR channels support high-resolution cameras, and the combined output of each channel produces high-definition surround images. The IMP-X4 can be combined with the CPU for high-performance real-time processing while acquiring image data from the camera. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) provided by the 3D graphics core enables high visibility and is easy to identify dangerous situations and is optimized for texture mapping via camera feedback. While integrating these features on a single chip, the R-Car V2H device also incorporates features that reduce power consumption to automotive system requirements, including system designs that balance performance and power consumption, and integrated cores. Power cut-off function and DDR3-SDRAM power backup function.

(2) Extended image recognition library support, including open source libraries (OpenCV) to improve software development efficiency

The image recognition processing performance of the IMP-X4 image recognition core is about eight times that of the previous generation SH7766 image processing chip. The IMP-X4 includes two programmable image processing accelerators, which may be used for image processing functions (including processing multiple cameras). Input) and also change its configuration as needed. Renesas' unique image recognition library support has been extended to include open source libraries (OpenCV), thus essentially improving the efficiency of client software development. The image recognition library does not require full performance extraction from the image recognition kernel through precise adjustments, resulting in consistent stability and smooth software upgrades. In addition, the Image Support Library is backward compatible with the IMP series used in earlier R-Car H1 and SH7766 Renesas products, making it easy to reuse existing software resources.

(3) Ethernet AVB combined with optimized video codec for next-generation automotive network and camera systems

Ethernet AVB provides features such as guaranteed bandwidth and synchronization of multiple cameras. This technology is expected to become the mainstream technology for automotive high-speed networks in the future. The R-CAR V2H includes a Gigabit Ethernet AVB controller that works with next-generation automotive networks.

In conjunction with Ethernet AVB technology to optimize multi-camera reception, Renesas also integrates multi-channel video codecs that support up to five HD cameras in parallel. In order to support the technology transition process of the surround view monitoring system video codec, R-Car V2H supports MJPEG & H.264.

Based on extensive experience in functional safety of embedded systems, the R-Car V2H has been designed to achieve a high level of functional safety. For example, to support the system manufacturer's security concept, ECC has been implemented in external memory and CPU cache. In addition, the hardware CRC feature makes it easy to implement end-to-end protection of data transmission. At the same time, the application of the high-reliability INTEGRITY® real-time operating system developed by Green Hills Software is an important step in achieving functional safety in hardware and software. By introducing INTEGRITY, the industry's most trusted real-time operating system, and its state-of-the-art security and functional security architecture, Renesas has developed products that provide reliable real-time decision-making mechanisms and security for its customers.
