The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an international joint research group have developed an ultra-thin LED film for medical and sensor manufacturing.

The new LED tube is grid-like, 100 micron square, and only 2.5 microns thick, much smaller than any current LED array.

According to the researchers, the film has good water resistance and biocompatibility, and can be used to make a variety of materials and equipment, such as implantable subcutaneous diagnostic instruments, illuminating surgical gloves, sutures, and intelligent drug delivery systems. It is also extremely flexible in terms of compatibility, and a variety of materials including aluminum foil and rubber can be applied.
