China Mobile leads the 5G transmission standard proposal to achieve 5G commercial use in 2020

Editor's Note: According to the Nikkei Chinese Network, the pattern of standardization of global communication standards dominated by Japan and Europe has changed. Including China, which has 1.3 billion mobile phone users and the largest user base in the world, more than 40% of the participants from this conference are from Asia. Before the 4G era, European and American companies have always been in the leading position in technology and service. But with the rise of China with a large user base, the battle for dominance has become chaotic. In the 5G era, the role of Chinese manufacturers has repeatedly increased. In November 2016, Polar Code, which is led by Huawei and promoted by China, was adopted by 3GPP as the 5GeMBB control channel standard solution. It is an important progress in the research and standardization of 5G mobile communication technology in China. In 2017, at the ITU-T SG15 plenary meeting held recently, China Mobile and China Telecom, China Unicom, ZTE, Fiberhome, and ICT have submitted several 5G transmission proposals, which is the first systematic The basic framework of the 5G transport network has laid the foundation for 5G transmission of global standards research.

The editor quoted the latest report from the C114 communication network. After the SBA architecture was accepted by the 3GPP as the 5G unified infrastructure, China Mobile's domestic industrial chain led to a victory.

At the ITU-T SG15 plenary meeting held recently, China Mobile and China Telecom, China Unicom, ZTE, Fiberhome, and ICT have submitted several 5G transmission proposals, which is the first systematically given by the industry. The basic framework of the 5G transport network laid the foundation for 5G transport global standards research.

The related proposals were highly recognized and widely recognized by the participating experts. At the summary meeting on June 30, the plenary session officially adopted the project proposal of "Technical Report Supporting IMT-2020/5G" (TRGS-TN5G) and the research plan of 5G transmission standard, which not only marks the ITU-T transmission standard in 5G. The research has taken a crucial step, which means that Chinese companies have begun to grasp the core discourse rights in the 5G international standards.

As an important promoter of the plan, Li Wei, deputy director of the China Mobile Research Institute Network, pointed out in an editorial interview that China Mobile is making every effort to promote the 5G standard and industry. "5G commercial, transmission first; compared to 4G, 5G transmission needs a technological revolution." Li Wei said, "At present, the industry's transmission requirements and technology for 5G are still unclear. China Mobile's lead 5G transmission standard is the source of standard development. Start with the industry chain to better understand each other's needs, recognize our proposed technical solutions, and accelerate the landing of new technologies and standards and the maturity of the industry chain through close collaboration."

Lead 5G transmission standard project

At the end of last month's MWC Shanghai, 5G has undoubtedly become the most eye-catching highlight. China Mobile also demonstrated 5G real-time applications such as 5G live test and remote driving. This undoubtedly makes people feel that the future of 5G has come.

5G needs to solve not only the connection between people, but also the interconnection of people and things, things and things, and the integration with vertical industries. This puts higher performance, delay and bandwidth for 5G networks. The requirements of the transmission network as a key link to the link will directly affect the 5G commercial process.

"The biggest difference between 5G and 3G/4G is that 5G not only has the requirement of large bandwidth, but also has clear requirements for multiple scenarios such as ultra-high reliability, low-latency communication, and mass machine communication. It is only simple for PTN, IP RAN or OTN upgrades and expansions cannot meet future needs.” Li Wei said, “5G CU/DU separation architecture, MEC sinking, network slicing and virtualization will drive the transformation of 5G transmission.” In his view, 5G transmission can be divided. For pre-transmission, inter-transmission and back-transmission, the pre-transmission is RRU to DU, the middle transmission is DU to CU, and the return is CU to 5G core network. "Every scene has its own different appeals."

In response to the prequel, Li Wei believes that delay and bandwidth are the main challenges. It should be dominated by fiber-optic direct drives, requiring large cores to access fiber optic cables and low-cost 25G/50G optical modules. For the scenario where the fiber is insufficient, consider introducing a simplified OTN device to solve the problems of delay, power consumption, and cost. Of course, the SPN (slicing packet network) device used for intermediate transmission and backhaul can be lightweight and extended to the prequel as a good choice.

In response to the transmission and return, China Mobile has proposed an SPN solution. It extends the FlexE converged TDM and Ethernet technologies at the link layer, adopts SR (segment rouTIng) at the network layer, introduces WDM at the physical layer, and introduces control planes. SDN, better meet the 5G transmission needs. Compared with the OTN-centric solution, SPN technology has advantages in terms of delay, network flexibility, transmission efficiency, and especially the industrial chain. This technical solution has aroused strong repercussions in the ITU-T SG15 plenary meeting, and has also received extensive support from the industry chain.

Take the initiative to accelerate the maturity of the industry

Li Wei pointed out that although the ITU has begun to standardize the 5G transmission, the relevant standards will not be introduced soon due to various factors.

"According to the goal of 5G commercialization in 2020, it is obviously unable to meet the market demand by waiting for the international standard of 5G transmission network to mature." According to Li Wei, China Mobile will formulate enterprise standards for 5G transmission this year, and will also promote relevant industry standards and The development of international standards.

Only when the standards are implemented and accepted by the industry chain can they bring out real value. In addition to the continued promotion of standards organizations such as the ITU, China Mobile is also stepping up its efforts to mature the industry chain.

This is very familiar for China Mobile. Not only does the TD industry chain achieve the transformation from scratch to weakness, but also from the weak to the strong under the guidance of the government and China Mobile. In terms of bearer network, China Mobile has also successfully made PTN. 100G quickly entered the large-scale commercial process. Taking PTN as an example, when China Mobile proposed the PTN standard, all transmissions were SDH equipment, but the network eventually evolved to PTN.

At present, some people hope to meet the 5G transmission requirements by upgrading the existing network. "The capacity of each generation of wireless network will increase by at least 10-100 times. The first generation transmission network supports two generations of wireless networks. After PTN and IP RAN technologies meet the 3G and 4G wireless networks, better transmission technology is needed to meet 5G or even The development of 6G. The new generation of transmission network must be forward-looking for the future." Li Wei said.

China Mobile's concept of 5G transmission network has also received positive response from the industry chain. During the MWC period, ZTE and FiberHome respectively released 5G transmission network products Flexhaul and Fithaul series, based on FlexE's innovative expansion technology, supporting pre-transmission, intermediate transmission and backhaul integrated bearers to achieve ultra-high reliability and extremely low latency. New features such as network fragmentation indicate that the industry has gradually formed a consensus on the technical architecture of 5G transport networks.
