Recent advances in CPU processing and DRAM capacity for smartphones and tablets allow users to enjoy more powerful applications, including HD video players and feature-rich games. These devices also require the use of embedded NAND flash modules as the primary non-volatile memory. Looking ahead, embedded NAND flash memory that meets UFS standards will be widely used on high-end mobile devices with its higher performance.

Current embedded NAND flash modules have become increasingly incapable of storing all of the data needed to execute host commands in the device controller's on-chip RAM, primarily due to its ever-increasing size; device controllers must be multiple times Reading data from NAND flash slows down the execution of commands. The result is an increasing demand for stronger random read performance and a better user experience. However, since it takes several microseconds to read data from the NAND flash memory, it is difficult to continuously improve the random read performance incrementally.

Toshiba has developed a new embedded NAND flash module device controller that can solve these problems.

The new device controller stores the data needed to execute host commands in the host-side DRAM, thereby reducing the number of read operations from the NAND flash. This will halve the time required to process the read command. The device controller writes data to the host DRAM and reads data from the host DRAM in accordance with the UFS UME Ver.1.0 standard. The UFS UME Ver.1.0 standard was released at the same time as UFS Ver.2.0.

Toshiba has also developed a hardware engine that can execute commands read from the host in parallel and integrates into the new device controller. This can achieve twice the random read performance than traditional technology.

These two new Toshiba technologies have created an embedded NAND flash module with a device controller with a 4KB random read performance of 60 kIOPS [2] or more [3]. This level of performance is approximately 10 times higher than modules that meet the e•MMC Version 5.0 standard.

The new device controller also integrates new analog circuit technology designed by Toshiba to support 5.8Gbps UFS ultra-high-speed serial communication per channel, which avoids increased power consumption.

If the mobile device adopts the embedded NAND flash module with the new device controller, it will be able to obtain higher random read performance, improve the response time of user interaction, shorten the application startup time, and improve the overall user experience.

Samples of embedded NAND flash modules with new device controllers are expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2014.
