Consumer products based on these ideas, called Glyph, look just like a set of studio headsets connected to smartphones. The two microdisplays in the headband give the viewer a rich multimedia experience while allowing them to see the real world around the edge of the display.

However, the device still strongly proves the feasibility of the concept, and soon after, Avegan introduced a portable, lightweight prototype device. "Even if it's just a prototype, we realize that our image quality is not available in previous devices of this kind," Tang said. "We think it's time to commercialize this device."

The LED lighting visual effects used on Glyph are supported by the versatile DLP micro-projection technology, which Avegant calls "the world's first retinal imaging technology." Avegant uses TI's 0.3-inch diagonal micromirror array and 720p resolution DLP3010 chip.

Tang said that Avegant chose to develop projection display technology based on DLP chipset because of its high brightness, small size, high resolution, rich color gamut and high energy efficiency. For him, a long-term relationship with TI is also very important.

“There are many good attributes in the DLP solution, such as the very high fill factor, so when the user is using Glyph, the eyes will not see any pixel distortion at all,” Tang said. “Low latency is another very Big advantage."

Tang said that he has seen users gradually discovering new applications other than media consumption in Glyph, which is very interesting. “All along, our primary focus is on those who are always looking for a high-quality entertainment experience, but I think we can't do enough to make it easier for users to use the device,” Tang said.
