Traditional streetlights affect fireflies breeding Inwells reloading LED lights

The National Council of Wales in the United Kingdom has decided to use LED street lights to improve because traditional high-pressure sodium street lamps interfere with local firefly breeding.

In short, male fireflies are easily attracted by orange sodium streetlights and less interested in female fireflies. That is to say, the light of the street lamp attracts the male firefly more than the female firefly. After the decision of the city council to vote, after the modification of LED street lights, the local firefly breeding situation has greatly improved, and the number of fireflies has improved.

In Wells, England, the breeding life of fireflies is affected by the high-pressure sodium road lighting.

According to a report from the Care2 foreign website, fireflies are usually glowing from the abdomen because they are light-emitting insects. Female fireflies can emit strong light on the abdomen, while males and larvae can only emit tiny light. During the mating season, female fireflies use the light emitted by the abdomen to attract male fireflies, which is why male fireflies are more attracted to artificial lighting.

Local naturalist Jenni Cox first discovered fireflies in Wells in 2011. A total of 300 female fireflies were found on the coast road in Wales, but the male fireflies did not find these female fireflies to mate. She said: "In the end, I found that about 50 male fireflies were gathered under the streetlights. I was thinking about what attracted them and prevented them from looking for female mating, so I returned this phenomenon to the Council's Director of Ecological Protection."

The life cycle of female fireflies is very short, with an average of only 14 days of life after the larval stage. Female fireflies usually die shortly after mating and lay eggs, yielding an average of 25 to 100 eggs. In addition, any interference from artificial light sources may affect the physical strength of the female fireflies and become more fragile, thus impacting the number of fireflies.

According to local researchers in Wells, LED lights have no effect on the number of fireflies.

However, there are also studies that LED light sources have an impact on fireflies. Ariel Firebaugh, an ecologist at the University of Virginia in the United States, found that in laboratory controlled experiments, LED lights can affect the courtship behavior of fireflies. According to Firebaugh's discovery, the female Phutinus pyralis is less likely to respond to male light under artificial light sources. However, in outdoor situations, LED lighting does not affect the flash behavior of male courtship. She said at the annual meeting of the American Ecological Association on August 11, 2015 that she believes that light damage may interfere with the reaction of females.

According to Firebaugh's experimental method, she used a fluorescent lamp and an LED lamp to test it. Although it was confirmed that there was interference with firefly behavior in a controlled environment, there was no legality for whether LED lights would attract fireflies during the night.
