Apple's Touch Bar is actually Microsoft's 2009 left to play?

The Verge Chinese Station reported on November 4

Apple just released a whole new generation of MacBook Pro notebooks last week, of which the Touch Bar is one of the biggest highlights. Many people think that the Touch Bar is actually similar to the adaptive button used on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon in 2014. However, Lenovo subsequently saw that the market repercussions were not enthusiastic and eventually cancelled the design. However, for now, Microsoft actually developed this customizable touch button design as early as 15 years ago.

It is reported that Microsoft's concept has appeared since 1999, projecting a customizable virtual keyboard through projection. Steven Bathiche, director of Microsoft Research, spent several years later trying to customize and display different functional buttons on the virtual keyboard. Although from the demo, most of the operations appear to be relatively primitive, the idea of a row of touch interfaces at the top of the keyboard is similar to that of today's MacBook Pro's Touch Bar.

The prototype device includes a projector, a touch screen, and basic keys. Microsoft defined it as a "adaptive keyboard" concept in 2009. Microsoft's adaptive keyboard uses a tactile button beneath the display, while at the top of the button shows a programmable area and can be operated by touch.

Obviously, Microsoft's idea is more malleable than Apple's Touch Bar. Different applications can interact with users in different ways. This idea can be used to increase productivity through different contextual operations and apps, and it doesn't just rely on traditional keystrokes on the keyboard.

However, Microsoft's idea is still in the concept stage. Through a 10-minute demo video, we can see that through the touch area above the keyboard, we can view the recently viewed document or program, and at the same time, we can do it without the need for a keyboard. The application operates. Microsoft even joined the notification area to display incoming call notifications from Skype and interact with the screen through the keyboard.

There is still no plan to turn this concept into reality, but Microsoft said that this is not in line with Microsoft's plan for PC products. It seems that Microsoft and Apple have already begun to see some differences in their positioning in the face of Windows and Mac. (Author: Tom Warren compilation: Rabbit)
