Baidu broke up with BMW! Also hand in Gao De!

Just when Baidu's unmanned vehicles opened their first urban road operation in Wuzhen, their important partner BMW left early.

The honeymoon period between BMW and Baidu began in September 2014.

At that time, the two sides signed a research and development cooperation agreement on promoting highly automated driving technology in China. According to the agreement, the project will cover six dimensions of vehicle use, driving strategy, high-precision three-dimensional environmental map, supporting infrastructure, relevant laws and industry standards, aiming to overcome the technical challenges faced by highly automated driving technology in the Chinese road environment. Its long-term plan is to enhance the safety of vehicle road driving through intelligent technology and reduce traffic accidents and casualties.

Baidu and BMW cooperation driving road test

Because it is an important hand for luxury car brands and domestic IT companies, the cooperation between BMW and Baidu has received much attention at that time. BMW and Baidu also released a slogan to showcase BMW's highly automated driving models that can be used on Chinese municipal roads after the three-year cooperation project.

On November 17, 2016, the German "Economic Weekly" reported that BMW and Baidu confirmed that the two companies terminated the cooperation between the two parties. The cooperation period originally signed by the two parties was three years, and neither company explained why the cooperation was terminated early. According to BMW employees who did not want to be named, there are "unreconcilable differences of opinion" between the two sides.

Germany's "Economic Weekly" also said that BMW will continue to develop autopilot systems in China, and to find another partner.

Baidu Company declined to comment on this news.

A Baidu unmanned vehicle parts supplier said that Baidu and BMW "break up", but there is no official channel to disclose the reasons. The supplier also said that this should be Baidu's support for state-owned brands in order to win the government's endorsement needs.

In September 2014, Baidu and BMW signed a cooperation agreement. The two parties plan to jointly overcome the technical challenges faced by highly automated driving in the Chinese road environment in the next three years. According to the cooperation agreement, Baidu and BMW's research and development cooperation involves vehicle use, driving strategies, maps, supporting infrastructure, relevant laws and industry standards.

Since then, in May 2015, the head of Baidu's cooperation project with BMW and the then deputy dean of Baidu Deep Learning Research Institute, Yu Kai, left Baidu to start a business.

On December 10, 2015, the first driverless car jointly developed by Baidu and BMW completed the first mixed road condition test in Beijing.

On December 14, 2015, the unmanned car developed by Baidu BMW was exhibited outside the venue of the Baidu Autopilot Division.

However, during the recent World Internet Conference held in Wuzhen, Baidu's 18 unmanned models have adopted China's own brand models, including Chery EQ, Beiqi EU260, and BYD Qin. This situation proves from the side that the cooperation between Baidu and BMW is stranded.

Baidu's cooperation with domestic automobile brands in the field of automatic driving has long been a clue

On December 14, 2015, at the inaugural meeting of Baidu Autopilot Division, Yin Tongyue, Chairman and General Manager of Chery Automobile Group, was present. Yin Tongyue and BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu were hired as Baidu Autopilot Consultants. At the Baidu World Congress held in early September 2016, Beiqi Baidu unmanned vehicles with BAIC New Energy and Baidu cooperated.

Behind the breakdown of Baidu’s cooperation with BMW may be the “King of China’s Map” between Baidu’s map and Gaode’s map.

In October 2016, Baidu Maps and Gaode Maps competed fiercely on indicators such as number of users and activity.

BMW hinted that it would "abandon" Baidu two months ago. In September 2016, Gaode Map and BMW officially reached a cooperation, the two sides will be committed to building a new vehicle traffic information system. It is reported that the first BMW model equipped with the new high-end car infotainment system will be officially launched in 2018.

According to the cooperation plan between the two parties, Gold and BMW will jointly provide Internet services for car owners including real-time traffic information and online route calculation. For BMW i-series electric vehicles and BMW hybrid vehicles, Gold will also solve the car owner's battery life concerns through the Internet.
