Oculus: Gear VR entertainment totals over 20 million hours

Oculus's move in the mobile VR space is primarily in collaboration with Samsung on Gear VR. This headset supports the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note phones, and most of the users are free to purchase the Samsung Galaxy series.

At the Code Mobile conference held recently, Max Cohen, vice president of Oculus' mobile division, said that "millions of users" have spent more than 20 million hours of entertainment on Gear VR. He added that "this number is still growing."

However, he also acknowledges that there are limitations to this VR device, lacking location tracking capabilities, including Gear VR and Google's latest release of the Daydream View headset. This type of mobile head display only allows the user to turn the head, but can't walk in a virtual scene, and more advanced devices usually need to be connected to a computer.

Cohen said: "Everyone thinks about holographic images, but you can't get holographic images from your mobile phone... it costs a lot. You need a high-end PC to drive."

But he believes that low-end VR devices belong to the "mass market", which means that these heads are likely to be the main force to attract everyone to the VR platform.

Oculus is also working on a third category of VR heads, an all-in-one device between Gear VR and Oculus Rift that can run VR content without the need for high-end smartphones or high-end PCs.

At the OC3 conference in October, Oculus demonstrated such a prototype, with internal and external tracking allowing users to move freely in the virtual world. Tracking from the inside out means that the camera in the head display can be positioned to track your every move.

Cohen pointed out that both devices will coexist (mobile VR head display and PC head display). In other words, whether it is a "plug-in" or an all-in-one, both are the key to getting hundreds of millions of people, or billions of people to get the head.
